Located in the historic village of Poquetanuck within the town of Preston, Connecticut, the family home built by Captain William Avery Gonzales Grant in 1754 stands as one of the oldest preserved buildings of its time. The story of the Grant family took a sad turn when, at the age of just 32, Captain Grant died at sea off the shore of Cape Hatteras. He left behind his wife, Mercy Adelaide Grant, his two children, and one unborn child. Captain Grant's wife lived the remainder of her life in the home before passing away in the 1800s.
The story doesn't end there. Many say that Mercy continues to wait for Captain Grant to return home. Captain Grant's is said to be haunted by the wife of the late sea captain, among other ghostly beings. In addition, the original town cemetery dating all the way back to the 1600s can be found just behind the house, and the modern cemetery dating from the 1800s is found just in front of it. Carol, one of the inn's owners, likes to joke that she has more dead than living neighbors.
Carol bought Captain Grant's over 25 years ago and lovingly restored the dilapidated building, turning it into a beautiful historic bed and breakfast that has been serving guests for over two decades. Guests come from all over to experience the paranormal, and most leave having experienced the unexplained. Common occurrences include hearing footsteps in the attic or taps on guest room doors. Disembodied voices are also captured frequently. Over the years, Captain Grant's has gained notoriety, appearing in TV on Home and Garden Television and A&E's Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal. It's been mentioned by a variety of news outlets, too, including USA Today, CNN, and others.
Captain Grant's is a great place to find a ghost, and it's also a great place to find suburb service and comfort. Carol and Ted keep the inn stocked with beer, wine, soda, and dessert free for guests to enjoy. Guests can even enjoy a sip of crème sherry from the carafes in their guest rooms! Even if you don't meet a ghost, you'll meet Carol and Ted, gracious, welcoming hosts dedicated to making your stay at Captain Grant's out of this world!
Carol wrote a book, The Ghosts of Captain Grant's Inn, about her own encounters with the supernatural both growing up and as the owner of Captain Grants. It's an interesting addition to a stay at Captain Grant's.
